Figuring Things Out
Ok, so now that I have actually done some of the in-depth research that we were suppose to do, along with taking a look at how others design for their target audiences I believe I have come up with a solid statement of purpose along with a good overview of both my audience, context and purpose. So here it is! Keep in mind all of these were created after thoroughly researching how to do a proper statement of purpose as well as outline what a statement of purpose should be based off. I have chosen my subject, my audience, my medium and I have already created an outline on which my website is going to be based. As long as I am able to find a website helper ( because I am completely uneducated in coding) that has blank templates, that I can manipulate or design to the exact design plan *webpage* outline I want. Anyways, back to my final Statement of Purpose. . .
Statement of Purpose:
My goal is to provide people with a basic historical education on the zodiac signs, while introducing to them the different perspectives of belief within; ultimately engaging them in questioning how their own zodiac signs play a role of influence in their life. The people that are my audiences are automatically connected with my subject because of the similarities that make us human beings; we were all born, we have identities, and we now live in an age where we are most likely able to find the means of accessibility to the internet and my educational website.

Audience:
My target audience is the students of the HU2642 Introduction to Digital Media Fall 2012 class. These students are around my age from seventeen to early twenties (most college students are around this age, but not always). Since they’re all around my age, there should be no age identity barrier created. Their educational background is similar to mine as well, seeing that they are in college; however I have taken note of some variation between majors as well as job experience. The majority is of humanities, but we do have some non-humanities majors, so I really need to stress the interests of both sides of the brain. I have taken a poll on some student interest in the subject, and all who have responded have been curious to find out more on the subject of which I am presenting. Most audience members are participating in this because it is required, seeing that they too have to present, but I have heard personally from several members that they would be interested in learning more about how horoscopes/zodiac signs are created, and what influences they could potentially have on their lives. Each student is creative, and has potential to be an attentive listener (in class, when responding they have the tendencies to hit many variations of perspectives on a subject). Their schedules should be available considering their schedule has this class time reserved for presentations; but this is with the exception of individual absences based on personal life, so I cannot predict with absolute certainty that my entire target audience will show. Regardless, my subject of presentation should be presentable to more than my target audience of students. It is an informative piece displaying the opposite ends of perspectives, so my secondary audience could be people accessing the web, my trial testing viewers, or even the professor of final review. Lack of properly understanding my audiences may cause confusion, a dead-end presentation without engagement or sense of curiosity. It would mean a lack of care in the audiences mind.

Context:
I have developed quite a few materials, and I intend to use this in a wide range of directions. I intend to use much of my research within my project. This research can lead the audience to address the questions that have about their own horoscope, after they figure out what their own horoscope really is. My design project will be accessible through web, and primarily through my presentation in-class. The only way this content would be inaccessible is if there is a lack of internet service – which would only affect my secondary audience who stumbles upon my webpage. If my approach of purpose is successful, the audience should feel engaged, interest and potentially as a result do their own research about their own horoscope and see if it lines up more accurately with their personality – which consequently might shape how they believe horoscopes or rather the arrangement of planets at the time in which they were born has an influence on their life.

Purpose:
My website is structured to help my target audiences become thoroughly educated on the different perspectives that truly lie beneath horoscopes and zodiac signs. I intend to help them realize that their original view on their own horoscope was most likely incorrect, and then give them the means of accessing a designated birth chart. I plan to display both sides of non-believers and believers, and leave it up them. Overall, one of my main connections to the larger picture is focusing on how cultural influence or influence at all can shape how we identify ourselves and how we behave. Somehow, this website will address the basics of the historical mythology behind all signs, the believer’s typical viewpoint, the non-believer’s typical viewpoint, the arguments for and against, how to identify your true zodiac horoscope, and ultimately a closure with questioning how the power of influence can affect your life, if it has affected the life of my audience. Ultimately, this is something any audience member could benefit on, because I will be displaying the two extremes of viewpoints, allowing them to fall somewhere between the two with their own personal opinion. Moving forward through this topic will require a lot of in-depth research and education on how to properly create a website to fit my means of purpose.

Chapter three R & R -- Specific Purpose
Zodiac Signs And Our Personal Prophecies
Specific Purpose
Reading Chapter three – Thinking through production was a
nice change of perspective for me. I was able to see how different formats and
layouts can truly reflect the type of affect your going for on your target
audience. Throughout this entire chapter I was really able to review the
strategies and ideas for arrangements of different sorts of media. I have
developed a specific topic after much thinking, and guidance from the last
chapter, which is Horoscopes/Zodiac Signs. Next step was to develop my specific
purpose. My general purpose was obviously to inform, but inform people about
what?
Some of the things I literally did in order to help me
identify my specific purpose were found within the first pages of chapter three.
“We believe when you compose you are designing different relationships
people will have with each other and their worlds. When you compose to do
something, you are, that is , designing futures (pg 60 Designing Compositions
Rhetorically).”
In the beginning chapter three talks about the notion of
design and how it connects powerfully to a sort of ‘creative intelligence’.
This was a curious wording choice for me. Ultimately the goal I discovered was
to use creative intelligence (whatever amounts of that I have in me to inspire
an argument, thus shaping an impact on my audience by either influencing their experiences,
their attitudes, or getting them to consider an issue or change their minds. So
how am I to do this? What specific purpose could I have that would allow me to
alter their perspectives of teach them something from a different angle?
I ultimately discovered a potential specific purpose when I
read and acted on the ‘How Do You Compose?’ section. I learned about time being
proportional to the project, so I immediately began research on my topic and
found it’s a wee-bit more complicated than expected; but in a good way. I
generated my own questions to find my specific purpose, like what does a birth
time have to do with how we receive our zodiac signs. The truth is there are
multiple theories, most people believe it’s the placement of the conciliation
that determines your zodiac sign, but (this is true to an extent) in most cases
it’s the placement of the planets. I learned about a structure of how I would
like to build my website when I went on a walk as well! As I was undergoing
these methods of research I kept returning to my statement of purpose. I
ultimately decided my specific purpose was to analyze the different methods by
which we are connected to our zodiac signs and how whether we behave is influenced
by our self-identities, or if our behavior follows the predictions of our
zodiac prophecies.

Blog Response to Wysocki Lynch
Designing Compositions Rhetorically
By: Julia Weiss
I enjoyed this reading more than
most of the others so far this semester.
Why you might ask? Well, for one it spoke of rhetoric (which the
reading gave a wonderful link to learn more information about) – which I am
fascinated by. Two, it made me view arguments in a different perspective
(informal/formal). Three, it told an easy to read, easy to relate to, and
entertaining story with a purpose what happens with
miscommunication/interpretation. Finally and most importantly, it has presented
ideas and concepts that are helping me to organize my own thoughts on how to
construct my rhetorical digital media artifact.
I have to admit that the upcoming project has me on edge and out of my
comfort zone. Thankfully, this reading has given me some sense of comfort and
idea of how to go about this seemingly daunting task.
Rhetoric in my opinion is the idea
of being aware of the connection between emotions/feelings and then
communicating them to your target audience. I began to think about rhetoric and
just how many views of rhetoric alone there are. Between the sophists,
Aristotle, Socrates, Cicero, Plato and the various changes in rhetorical views
over time, political alteration in ancient Greece and then reading the Wysocki and Lynch piece I have come to the conclusion that just like rhetoric is viewed
with many perspectives, the way I construct my project can be done in many
different ways, but that still leaves a bit of space for option confusion and
stress.
To help with this confusion the Wysocki
and Lynch piece presented several helpful and directing concepts; mainly
audience context and purpose. If used accurately, these key aspects will help
to establish a solid relation with your viewer/decoder. To help better establish
understanding of what consists of the processes within these key aspects page
28 in the reading has a nice diagram emphasizing what to think about when
creating a rhetorical argument: such as, medium, arrangement, sense of purpose,
developing the statement of purpose, and finally testing the product.
When going about his project I need
to think of place, time, potential outcome, arrangement, context, audience,
purpose, strategy, medium, larger context, visual information, general purpose,
and what to expect from the audience in return. It is important to note that I
as a presenter not only have to be prepared and attentive, but in order for my
product to be successful, so does the audience.
I am most definitely going to use
this reading as a source for inspiration and guidance when choosing my method
of production for this next big assignment. I found the quote on page 30 to really
help guide my thoughts on how to judge my product from start to finish,
